This
laboratory conducts research on various aspects of microbiology
and molecular biology of tuberculosis leprosy and other mycobacterial
infections. This laboratory specifies in the area of taxonomy,
viability and drug resistance whereas molecular biology studies
focus on diagnosis using gene probes, PCR and other important
aspects such as molecular epidemiology, molecular mechanisms
of drug resistance, genomic studies aiming at strain diversity
and expression of the genes within the host.
This
laboratory has 4 core scientists, 3 research assistants, 16
Ph.D. & 6 MD students, several project staff and technicians
to support these programmes. This laboratory has modern state-
of- the- art equipment for DNA Fingerprinting, DNA Sequencing,
real time PCR, Microarrays, BSL 2 & 3 laboratories.
Core
scientists :
- Dr.V.M.Katoch, Director has been heading the
laboratory since the beginning. He is M.D. from AIIMS,
New Delhi, a talent search scheme scholar of ICMR, has
25 years of experience working on microbiology and molecular
biology of mycobacterial diseases and has contributed
170 papers on aspects such as, different taxonomy markers
(lipids, isoenzymes, enzymes and genes) , in-vitro viability
methods such as, ATP bioluminiscence and RNA probes, molecular
aspects such as, ribotyping, molecular epidemiology using
other genetic markers, molecular mechanisms of drug resistance
etc. He is a recipient of various awards such as, Young
Scientists Award of IAMM, Sher-I-Kashmir Sheikh Mohd.Abdullah
Oration Award, Dr.CGS Iyer Oration Award, Erwin Stindll
Memorial Oration Award, Dr.S.C.Agarwal Oration Award,
Dr.Manu Patel Memorial Award , JALMA Trust Fund Oration
Award and IAMM Endowment Award . His current interests
are molecular mechanisms of drug resistance, molecular
epidemiology and genomics on which he is conducting DBT
& ICMR funded studies.
- Dr.V.D.Sharma, Assistant Director is a Ph.D.
from Dr.B.R.Ambedker University, Agra, has more than 20
years of experience of working on microbiology and molecular
biology of mycobacterial diseases and has contributed
papers on various aspects of his research specially focused
on taxonomy using iso enzymes, ribosomal rna genes and
RAPD. His current interests are molecular epidemiological
studies using RAPD and other aspects of genomic based
studies.
- Dr.D.S.Chauhan, Research Officer is a Ph.D
from Dr.B.R.Ambedker University, Agra has more than 7
years of experience of working on microbiology and molecular
biology of mycobacterial diseases and has contributed
15 papers on various related aspects. His areas of current
interests are molecular epidemiology and genomic studies
pertaining to strain diversity, expression of M.leprae
gene and mechanisms of drug resistance.
