This
Unit has been engaged in various studies pertaining to clinical
and therapeutic aspects of leprosy. The unit is currently
carrying out studies in leprosy patients treated for different
durations, evaluating the effect of drug regimens in the hospital
and patients in the field , evaluating the efficacy of different
doses of steroids in reactions and epidemiological studies
of leprosy in Agra district.
This
Unit has a core strength of 3 scientists and several other
paramedical staff.

scientists :
- Dr.B.K.Girdhar, Deputy Director (S.G.) and Head
of Medical Unit II is an M.D. from AIIMS, New Delhi
has more than 27 years of experience of working in leprosy
research, has published 147 papers on clinical and therapeutic
aspects which includes drug resistance studies, leprosy
in children and infants, organ involvement, testing of
pulse doses of rifampicin and several drug regimens leading
to concept of limited (short course) treatment of leprosy.
He is a recipient of Erwin-Strindl Memorial Oration Award,
JALMA Trust Fund Oration Award, Dr.Mohan Lal Oration Award,
Dr.K.N.Saxena Oration Award & Khandari Award. His
current interests are study of relapses in regimens treated
for different durations, effect of new regimens in patients
in the field area, study of effect of different doses
of steroids and epidemiology of leprosy.
- Dr.Anita Girdhar, Deputy Director is a Graduate
from Medical College, Rohtak has more than 27 years of
experience of working in leprosy and has published 68
papers. Her current interests are study of effect of different
doses of steroids in reversal reactions and epidemiology
of leprosy.
- Dr.J.Chakma, Research Officer is a graduate
from Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi. He joined
the Institute about 3 years back and has recently started
studies on antibodies secreted by lymphocytes and their
role in the diagnosis.
